Antalya

Antalya (äntäl`yä), city (1990 pop. 378,726), capital of Antalya prov., SW Turkey, a port on the Mediterranean Sea. Its manufactures include textiles and ships. Nearby are deposits of chrome and manganese. Founded in the 2d cent. B.C. by Attalus II, king of Pergamum, the city was known as Attaleia or Attalia, later as Adalia. It is mentioned in Acts 14.25 as the port from which Paul and Barnabas sailed to Antioch. It passed under the control of the Seljuk Turks in the 13th cent. and in the 15th cent. was annexed by the Ottoman Empire. Situated on a steep cliff, Antalya is a picturesque city surrounded by many ancient ruins; there is a notable archaeological museum. With its airport it is a gateway for S Turkey's coastal resorts.
