Australian National University, located in Canberra and state-sponsored, founded 1946 as Australia's only completely research-oriented university. Originally limited to graduate studies, it expanded in 1960, merging with Canberra University College (est. 1929). In 1992 it combined with the Canberra Institute of the Arts and began offering degrees in art and music. The university is particularly known for its Institute of Advanced Studies, which includes 10 specialized scientific research schools, and has law and medical schools.
