Carrara (kär-rä`rä), city (1991 pop. 67,197), Tuscany, N central Italy, near the Ligurian Sea. It is the most important center of the Italian marble marble, metamorphic rock composed wholly or in large part of calcite or dolomite crystals, the crystalline texture being the result of metamorphism of limestone by heat and pressure. ..... With Massa, the city constituted the principality, later duchy, of Massa and Carrara (15th–19th cent.).
