Foligno

Foligno (fōlē`nyō), city (1991 pop. 53,202), in Umbria, central Italy. It is a commercial and industrial center and a railroad junction. Manufactures include machinery, transport equipment, paper, and textiles. Foligno was under papal control from the mid-15th cent. until 1860. Of note in the city are the Romanesque cathedral (12th cent., frequently restored) and the Palazzo Trinci (15th cent., with a 19th-century neoclassical facade). A local school of art flourished in the 15th cent.
