It's taken thirty-one years for someone to figure out a way to position Darger as the new Grandma Moses, but in filmmaker Jessica Yu (who won an Oscar in 1997 for her nonfiction short Breathing Lessons) he has been afforded an enormously effective ambassador.
This interesting history lesson includes commentary on the first folk art exhibition in this country in 1924, the importance of the WPA program, and Grandma Moses, whom the author calls the "first true living folk art celebrity.
In Wallner's latest picture book portrait, we are introduced to Grandma Moses as a hard-working young New York farm girl named Anna Mary Robinson who watched her father paint murals inside their house.
