Highland Park. 1 City (1990 pop. 30,575), Lake co., NE Ill., a suburb of Chicago on Lake Michigan; inc. 1869. It is a retail business and medical center for the North Shore area. Nearby Ravinia Park is the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in residence for the Ravinia Music Festival, held there annually since 1936. Adjacent Fort Sheridan closed in 1993; part of the area is now a National Historic Landmark District. 2 City (1990 pop. 20,121), Wayne co., SE Mich., within the confines of Detroit; laid out 1818, inc. as a city 1917. Traditionally linked to Detroit's automobile industry, Highland Park grew after Henry Ford Edsel Bryant Ford, 1893–1943, b. Detroit, shared in the control of the vast Ford industrial interests. He was president of the Ford Motor Company from 1919 until his death, when his father once more became (1943) president of the company. 3 Residential borough (1990 pop. 13,279), Middlesex co., N central N.J., on the Raritan River opposite New Brunswick; inc. 1905. |
