Hoyerswerda

Hoyerswerda (hoi'ərsvĕr`dä), city (1994 pop. 60,890), Saxony, SE Germany, on the Black Elster River; chartered 1371. Located in a lignite-mining area, it is an industrial city, manufacturing glass, bricks, and other products. Economic decline after German reunification has resulted in a significant population drop; Hoyerswerda was once a city of 75,000.

The scandalous implications of the incidents at Hoyerswerda, Rostock, and elsewhere had a disturbing impact on the nation s liberal self-image, despite attempts by the media to minimize the events as acts by individuals.
