International Refugee Organization (IRO), temporary agency of the United Nations United Nations (UN), international organization established immediately after World War II. It replaced the League of Nations . In 1945, when the UN was founded, there were 51 members; 192 nations are now members of the organization (see table entitled United Nations ..... Click the link for more information. , established in 1946. In arranging for the care and the repatriation or resettlement of Europeans made homeless by World War II, the organization brought to a conclusion part of the work of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. IRO terminated its work in 1952, having resettled c.1,000,000 persons. It was superseded by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. BibliographySee L. W. The IRO assisted refugees and displaced persons in Europe and Asia who could not or would not return home after World War II. | The world community mobilized itself, creating the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) and the International Refugee Organization (IRO). To get its program off the ground, the BWA committee linked up with the World Council of Churches Ecumenical Refugee Division, an agency that the International Refugee Organization had approved to carry out work in Germany. The International Refugee Organization was then created in 1947 to resettle, rather than repatriate, the victims of war. |
