Isleta (ĭslĕt`ə), pueblo (1990 pop. 1,703), Bernalillo co., central N.Mex., on the east bank of the Rio Grande, just S of Albuquerque. It is a tourist attraction, having historical and cultural interest and a gambling casino. According to many experts, the pueblo stands on the site it occupied when discovered in 1540. It was the seat of the Franciscan mission of San Antonio de Isleta from c.1621 until the Pueblo revolt of 1680. The Spanish captured the pueblo in 1681, and most of the captives were ultimately settled at Ysleta, Tex. In the early 18th cent., when N Isleta was either rebuilt or repopulated, it became the mission of San Agustín de Isleta. Tiwa, a Tanoan language, is the native tongue of the Isleta Pueblo.
