. In 1991 it was officially renamed the St. Petersburg Maryinsky Ballet; however, on its frequent tours abroad it is still called the Kirov Ballet. Often regarded as the foremost European ballet company, with strict classical traditions of elegance and beauty, the company was originally the Imperial Russian Ballet. In 1889 it moved into the Maryinsky Theater. Under the direction of Marius Petipa Petipa, Marius (märyüs` pĕtēpä`), 1822–1910, French dancer and choreographer, b. Marseilles.

 the company premiered the Tchaikovsky ballets Sleeping Beauty (1890) and Swan Lake (1895). The company went into decline after the Russian Revolution in 1917, but the great teacher and ballet mistress Agrippina Vaganova (1879–1951) helped preserve its traditions by training the company's principal dancers. Her work became the foundation of ballet instruction in the Soviet Union. In 1935 the company was renamed the Kirov Ballet. Golden Masks, which are awarded annually for the best stage performances in Russia, were given to John Neumeier, for his Midsummer Night's Dream for the Bolshoi Ballet, and David Dawson, former principal with Ballett Frankfurt and resident choreographer for Dresden Semperoper Ballet, for the choreography of Reverance, created for the Kirov Ballet.
Well, after producing and starring in The End of Silence (2005), an independent film that has been bought and released by Blockbuster in Canada, the former Kirov Ballet and ABT member is back on the ballet scene in a major way.
When Russia's esteemed Kirov Ballet leaps onto the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion next week, it's the only time you'll see tutus during the 2005-06 season of Dance at the Music Center.
