Kristallnacht (krĭs'täl-näkht) [Ger.,=night of crystal], in German history, the night of Nov. 9, 1938, a night of violence against Jews and of destruction of the businesses and other property belonging to them. The name is a reference to the broken glass that resulted from the destruction. I remember her telling us once about the 1938 Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) pogrom, during which Nazi mobs attacked Jews, burned synagogues, and smashed Jewish businesses and institutions. 1938: A Nazi-organized persecution of Jews known as Kristallnacht (kris-TULL-nokt)--or Night of Broken Glass--takes place. Oma relates the story of her early life in Germany through the photographs, but while previously Oma had always stopped sharing the first album partway through, now Rachel is old enough to hear the whole story--the inexorable degeneration of Jews' rights, Kristallnacht, the family's separation, "dismal years" in concentration camps. |
