. Major organs, such as the heart, may be damaged as the disease progresses. The disease struck over 180 people attending an American Legion convention in Philadelphia in July, 1976—hence the name. The causative bacterium, later identified as Legionella pneumophilia, is inhaled via contaminated water droplets, primarily from air conditioning and ventilation systems. A milder form of the disease has also been identified. Treatment is with the antibiotic erythromycin erythromycin (ĭrĭth'rōmī`sĭn), any of several related antibiotic drugs produced by bacteria of the genus

During July and August 2005, two patients with Legionnaire's disease living in 2 countries in Europe were reported to EWGL1NET.
OSHA's technical manual on Legionnaire's Disease (section III, Chapter 7) states that water should not only be stored at a minimum of 140[degrees]F, but it should be "delivered at a minimum of 122[degrees]F to all outlets" to "minimize the growth of Legionella in a system.
