Leuna (loi`nä), city (1994 pop. 8,130), Saxony-Anhalt, S central Germany. There, in 1916, the first synthetic nitrogen plant began to operate after the invention of the Haber process. The city was badly damaged in World War II, the target being the extensive chemical installations. Nevertheless, the city grew as a center of the German synthetic chemical industry, and it is today the seat of one of the largest chemical works in Germany. |

| PMT Italia, Pinerolo, Italy and Kartogroup Deutschland, Germany have started up a new 60,000 metric ton per year tissue plant in Leuna, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany that produces tissue from virgin pulp. Distinctions reveal that plants related to the main factory complexes such as Leuna, a Hoechst facility in the Halle-Merseburg region, and Oppau, a BASF plant that produced synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, were the most disruptive. Zeon and Buna Sow Leuna Olefinverbund GmbH (BSL), an affiliate of Dow Deutchland, have signed a new license agreement. |
