Leverkusen (lā'fərk  `zən), city (1994 pop. 161,760), North Rhine–Westphalia, W Germany, on the Rhine River. It is an industrial center and a road and rail junction. Manufactures include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, machinery, and textiles. There is a noted chemical-research library in the city. |

Bayer MaterialScience AG, Leverkusen, Germany, has completed the expansion of its production facilities for methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) in Tarragona, Spain, by 50,000 tons a year to an annual capacity of 150,000 tons. Bayer MaterialScience AG in Germany has invested $29 million to establish Lyttron Technology GmbH, a start-up company to produce electroluminescent films at Bayer's headquarters site in Leverkusen. The second of the two largest castings ever produced by the western world, each weighing more than 300 tons, has been delivered by Sheffield Forgemasters, Sheffield, England, to SMS Eumuco, Leverkusen, Germany. |
