The 53-year-old bases some of her dolls on the Maasai of East Africa and others on masks she admires from Ivory Coast. If one asks a Kamba sculptor (or in Tanzania, a Zaramo one) why he chooses to represent the Maasai and not someone from his own community, there is a short answer and a longer, more complex one. I was particularly attracted to his discussion comparing the African Creed of the Maasai people of East Africa and the Nicene Creed. |
