Norwich University, at Northfield and Montpelier, Vt.; coeducational; founded 1819 as a private military college, opened 1820 at Norwich, Vt.; chartered under present name 1834, moved to Northfield 1866. It comprises the Military College of Vermont, at Northfield, and Vermont College (est. 1834 as a Methodist seminary, absorbed by Norwich 1972), a liberal arts school, at Montpelier. It was one of the first schools in the United States to offer an engineering education. The school conducts an intensive summer program in Russian language and literature and a Peace Corps preparatory program. The library at Northfield has an extensive military history collection. |
