Shimoda

Shimoda (shĭmō`dä), town (1990 pop. 30,081), Shizuoka prefecture, E central Honshu, Japan, at the south extremity of Izu peninsula, on Shimoda Bay. It is an important port for the peninsula. The first U.S. consulate, under Townsend Harris, was opened at Shimoda in 1856. The Gyokusenji Temple, where Harris resided (1856–57), is now a memorial.
