Sunnyvale, city (1990 pop. 117,229), Santa Clara co., W Calif., near San Francisco; settled 1849, inc. 1912. A city in Silicon Valley Silicon Valley, an industrial region, approximately 20 mi (32 km) long, in the Santa Clara Valley between Palo Alto and San Jose, mainly in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, W central Calif., where many computer manufacturing and design companies are located. ..... Sunnyvale's population increased significantly in the late 20th cent. SunnyvaleCity (pop., 2000: 131,760), western California, U.S. Sunnyvale was settled in 1850 and was incorporated in 1912. It was originally a fruit-processing centre; its economic base shifted when the U.S. Navy built a dirigible base nearby in the 1930s and the Joshua Hendy Iron Works (later Westinghouse Electric Corp.) expanded in 1942. Its population grew rapidly in the 1960s. Chief manufactures include guided missiles. |
