Vaduz (väd ts`), town (1996 pop. 5,017), capital of Liechtenstein, W Liechtenstein, on the Rhine River. It is a tourist center. A beautiful medieval castle (now an art museum) dominates the town. Vaduz was destroyed (1499) in the war between the Swiss and the Holy Roman Empire and was rebuilt in the early 16th cent.VaduzCity (pop., 1997 est.: 5,000), capital of Liechtenstein. Located on the Rhine River, it was greatly damaged in 1499 in a war between the Swiss and Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, but it was subsequently rebuilt. The Liechtenstein family gained possession in the early 18th century. It is a flourishing tourist centre and the residence of the ruling prince, whose castle overlooks the town. The town's Fürst Liechtensteinische Gemäldegalerie displays parts of the world-famous art collection of the princes of Liechtenstein. |
