There is an elaborate ritual during which he hands over an image of San Sebastian and other symbols of his authority. The festival also features a jousting pantomime, dancing to the rhythm of a special drum, two feasts, and a mock healing ceremony. The connection between the Día de San Sebastián festivities and the martyrdom of St. Sebastian, however, remains obscure. More...

Bariatric Surgery Could Improve Heart Health

Weight-loss surgery may reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke as well as lower the risk of dying as a result of one. A 15-year study of obese men and women found that those who had bariatric surgery were 33 percent less likely to have a heart attack or stroke than those who opted to forgo surgery, and they were about half as likely to die from one. Interestingly, though the surgical patients were generally more likely to have lost weight during the course of the study, the amount of weight loss was not associated with the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death.
