Tektites are naturally occurring glass rocks that may have fallen from the sky. Normally jet black to olive green, the small, often aerodynamically shaped objects exist only in limited areas called strewn fields. Tektites are believed to have formed from droplets of molten rock, blasted into the atmosphere by meteorite or asteroid impacts, which then cooled and fell back to Earth. Second Vatican Council Convenes (1962)

Held in four sessions over the course of three years, the Second Vatican Council was a meeting of Catholic Church leaders with the announced purpose of reconsidering the position of the church in the modern world. Macedonian National Uprising Day (2017)

October 11 marks the anniversary of the beginning of the Macedonian people's uprising against fascism during World War II. This holiday is observed through formal ceremonies at which the prime minister and other dignitaries deliver addresses acknowledging the significance of this revolt to the spirit of Macedonian independence. Cockroach-Eating Competition Turns Deadly

A Florida pet store's cockroach-eating competition took a gruesome turn when the winner, 32-year-old Edward Archbold, collapsed and died before he could even claim his prize: an $850 python. Experts are puzzled by his death. While taboo in the US, eating cockroaches and other insects, especially those raised in a clean, controlled environment, is generally considered safe. None of the other contest participants got sick. A medical examiner is now investigating Archbold's death and whether an allergic reaction to the bugs could be to blame. More...
