The Phonograph Cylinder

The first machine to reproduce recorded sound, the phonograph, was built by Thomas Edison in 1877. Edison's "records," as they were called, were first made of tin foil wrapped around cylinders. Since tin foil was not a practical recording medium for everyday use and commercial production, cylinders made of wax, and later plastic, were introduced and dominated the market until the advent of disc records in the early 20th century. Cornerstone of the White House Is Laid in Washington, DC (1792)

Originally called the "President's Palace," the residence of the president of the United States was designed by Irish-American architect James Hoban with guidance from President George Washington, whose term ended before he was able to move in. Another female explorer introduced her to what murderous tribal custom? More...

Drop in Tuberculosis-Related Illness and Death

The World Health Organization is reporting that, for the first time, the number of people falling ill with tuberculosis (TB) has declined. In 2005, 9 million people became ill with TB. Last year, that number dropped to 8.8 million. The number of deaths from TB also declined in 2010, reaching its lowest level in a decade. Still, a lack of funding, particularly in the fight against multidrug-resistant TB, could derail the progress made against the disease. More...
