Chemical Burns

A chemical burn occurs when living tissue is exposed to any of six types of chemical substance. Acids, bases, oxidizers, solvents, and reducing agents can all cause chemical burns without the presence of a heat source. Burns may occur right away, though they may not be immediately evident. Theodore Roosevelt Shot in the Chest While Campaigning (1912)

During a bid for the presidency in 1912, Roosevelt was shot by saloonkeeper John Schrank. The bullet lodged in his chest after penetrating a steel eyeglass case and a folded copy of the 50-page speech he was carrying in his jacket, but he refused to go to the hospital until after he had delivered his scheduled speech. Boone Festival (2018)

Held annually in Barbourville, Kentucky, this festival honors the frontiersman Daniel Boone (1734-1820), who in 1775 carved a trail through the Appalachian Mountains from eastern Tennessee to the Ohio River. An important part of the festival is the signing of the Cherokee Cane Treaty, which provides the Cherokee people with cane that they use to make baskets. Other festival events include an old-fashioned barbecue featuring pioneer and American-Indian foods, a long-rifle shoot, and competitions such as hog-calling, wood-chopping, and fiddling. More...
