The Weeping Willow

Easily recognized by its long drooping branches and leaves, the weeping willow belongs to the Salicaceae family of deciduous trees and shrubs. It is native to China, but, as willow cuttings generally take root quite easily, it has been cultivated elsewhere for millennia. Legend has it that all of England's weeping willows are descended from a cutting sent to Lady Suffolk from Spain. Olympic Medalists Create Furor with Black Power Salute (1968)

The silent protest of two black American athletes at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City was an iconic and controversial statement. Sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos received their medals shoeless to draw attention to black poverty in America, and they performed the Black Power salute as their national anthem played. Both of his sons committed suicide, and he disowned his daughter for marrying whom? More...

Second Case of Ebola Transmission in US

A second US nurse who treated Liberian Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan has tested positive for the disease, raising concerns that more of the dozens of hospital staffers involved in Duncan's care may come down with the virus. Further concerns were raised after it emerged that the sickened nurse took a commercial flight the night before she was diagnosed. Health officials are now assessing the flight's 132 passengers for any signs of illness, though the likelihood of transmission at that time was remote. More...
