The Beverage-Can Stove

A beverage-can stove is a homemade, lightweight, portable, reusable stove made from aluminum beverage cans. Popular among backpackers, it requires more fuel than some commercial stoves but is incredibly lightweight and easy to make. It is also said to be fail-proof even in difficult environments. The Hungarian Republic Is Officially Proclaimed (1989)

The defeat of the Central Powers in WWI brought the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary to an end and led to the creation of an independent Hungarian republic, which, in 1949, came under Communist control. He succeeded to the throne in 1868 when he was 15 years old, was crowned in 1873, and ruled until his death in 1910. He had been a pupil of Anna Leonowens, who taught the young prince about Abraham Lincoln. The story of her stay in the royal court, and her teaching of the royal children and concubines, was told in Margaret Landon's book, Anna and the King of Siam. More...

Groundwater Extraction Linked to Lorca Quake

Scientists say a deadly earthquake in Spain last year was likely triggered by decades of groundwater extraction, which caused an 820-foot (250-meter) drop in the groundwater level of the Alto Guadalentin basin over the past half a century. The town of Lorca, where the 5.1-magnitude quake claimed the lives of nine people in May 2011, is located in a seismically active region. Researchers believe that the removal of groundwater placed stress on the nearby Alhama de Murcia Fault, leading to the earthquake. More...
