Turkmenistan Gains Independence from the Soviet Union (1991)

Following Turkmenistan's independence, the head of its Communist Party, Saparmurat Niyazov, became president. He developed a totalitarian cult of personality, isolating the Central Asian nation culturally and politically. Citizens were tested on their knowledge of Niyazov's autobiography and spiritual guide book, the Ruhnama—even on driver's license tests. In addition to his comic-book inspired panels, he created ironic pop art reinterpretations of famous paintings by artists such as Picasso. Which of his works was destroyed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks? More...

Fecal Transplants Cure Clostridium difficile

Clostridium difficile is one of hundreds of species of bacteria normally living in the human intestinal tract, but when the other species are wiped out, it can overwhelm the gut, causing severe diarrhea and even death. C. difficile is difficult to cure, as the very thing that often creates the problem—antibiotics—is also the standard treatment. Fecal transplants may hold the key to restoring bacterial balance. Researchers hope to eliminate the "ick factor," as well as the risk of transmitting infections, by identifying which fecal bacteria are needed to clear up C. difficile and then growing them in a lab instead of using actual fecal matter.
