Sharm el-Sheikh

Sharm el-Sheikh is a resort city overlooking the Strait of Tiran, near the southern tip of Sinai at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba. Strategically important, it was captured by Israel during the Sinai conflict of 1956 and restored to Egypt in 1957. During the 1967 Six Day War, Israel recaptured the city, returning it in 1982. Today, Sharm el-Sheikh's major industry is tourism, due to the city's dramatic landscape, pleasant climate, and beautiful beaches. What shocked the town in December 2010? More...

Shakespeare's Othello Performed for the First Time (1604)

First performed at London's Whitehall Palace, Shakespeare's Othello—a timeless story of jealousy, betrayal, and racism—is still studied and debated today. The play is likely an adaptation of a short story by Italian writer Cinthio called "Un Capitano Moro" and may have been inspired by certain events of the day—such as the arrival of a Moorish delegation in London in 1600. In Shakespeare's tale, the protagonist strangles his wife, but in Cinthio's story, she is killed in what brutal way? More...

For decades, he was in charge of selecting the All-American football team for Collier's magazine. In his widely syndicated column, "The Sportlight," Rice coined some of sports' most memorable phrases. What famous quote about winning and losing is derived from one of Rice's poems? More...

All Saints' Day (2017)

In Roman Catholic, Anglican, and many Protestant churches, the first day of November is a celebration of all the Christian saints—particularly those who have no special feast days of their own. Also known as All-Hallomas or All Hallows' Day, the idea for this holy day goes back to the fourth century, when the Greek Christians kept a festival on the first Sunday after Pentecost (in late May or early June) in honor of all martyrs and saints. Fragment of Earhart's Plane Possibly Found

The mystery of Amelia Earhart's disappearance may be a mystery no longer. A team researching the fate of the daring American aviatrix who vanished during a 1937 attempt to circumnavigate the globe now says that a slab of aluminum found on an uninhabited Pacific island in 1991 came from her aircraft. Many are skeptical about the claim, as there are no identifying markings on the sheet of metal and it does not appear to have been a standard part of the type of plane she was piloting. However, the researchers believe it had been installed as a patch on Earhart's plane. More...
