Human Branding

Historically, human branding—the practice of burning marks or patterns into the skin of a living person—was used to mark slaves and criminals. The ancient Romans branded runaway slaves with the letters FUG, for fugitivus. Until the 1800s, hot irons were used to brand British criminals with letters specific to their crimes. North Korean Leader Sexiest Man Alive?

On Tuesday, a 55-page online photo spread of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un graced the website of China's People's Daily newspaper after he was named the "Sexiest Man Alive for 2012" by The Onion. What the journalists at the Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper apparently failed to realize is that The Onion is a US news satire organization and that the entire story was merely a tongue-in-cheek jab at the moon-faced statesman. The People's Daily even published quotes from The Onion describing the "Pyongyang-bred heartthrob" as "every woman's dream come true" before realizing its mistake and taking down the story. More...
