Madame Nhu

The sister-in-law of the unwed president of South Vietnam, Madame Nhu was the country's de facto First Lady from 1955 to 1963. A Catholic by conversion, she pushed for the passage of "morality laws" outlawing, among other things, abortion, contraceptives, dance halls, and beauty pageants. The Buddhist majority resented the leadership's imposition of Catholic values, and the family was eventually forced from power in a coup. Why was Madame Nhu nicknamed "The Dragon Lady"? More...

Bosnian War: 427-Year-Old Stari Most Destroyed (1993)

Arching high above the Neretva River, the Stari Most—or "Old Bridge"—was a 16th-century bridge in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the greatest architectural works of its time. Despite being of little strategic value, it was shelled during wartime by Croat forces. After the war, it was carefully rebuilt as close to its original dimensions as possible. Divers were even brought in to recover materials that had fallen into the river. What dangerous competition is held on the bridge each summer? More...

His rocky friendship with Leo Tolstoy included a 17-year period during which the men did not speak to each other after Tolstoy did what? More...

Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran (2017)

This Roman Catholic observance commemorates Pope Sylvester's consecration of the Basilica of the Most Holy Savior, commonly known as St. John Lateran, in Rome on November 9, 324. Churches as they are known today—that is, buildings set apart as places of worship—did not exist for the first two centuries of the Christian era; believers gathered in each other's homes. Thus, the pope's public dedication of this church at the beginning of the fourth century was a first in Christianity and merited a special celebration. More...

Wi-Fi Hotspots Today: One for Every 150 People

Today, there is one Wi-Fi hotspot for every 150 people on Earth, and over the next four years, the number of hotspots is projected to grow considerably, bringing the ratio closer to one for every 20 people. These numbers do not paint a completely accurate picture though, as hotspots are not evenly distributed around the globe. Currently, Europe has the most Wi-Fi hotspots of any continent, but Asia is expected to overtake it by 2018. And while North America is projected to have one hotspot for every four people in 2018, Africa will have only one for every 408 people. More...
