Seamus Heaney

Heaney is an Irish poet, writer, and lecturer who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995. His carefully crafted poetry has been praised for its powerful imagery, meaningful content, musical phrasing, and compelling rhythms. Focused on "the local," he often writes about the disappearing world of unspoiled rural Ireland and hints at the sectarian violence of the north where he was born. In 1999, he published a highly regarded verse translation of what epic poem? More...

Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin Awarded Patent (1794)

In the months leading up to January of 1915, Hodler made a series of paintings documenting what? More...

Canberra Day (2016)

Canberra, the capital city of Australia, was founded on March 12, 1913. Unusual in that it is one of the few world capitals planned from the ground up, the city and its giant ornamental pond, Lake Burley Griffin, were built out of a depression in a dusty plain about 200 miles southwest of Sydney. The city's founding celebration marks the end of the two-week Canberra National Multicultural Festival, an outdoor community event that encompasses everything from hot-air balloon rides and a car show to fireworks and musical performances.
