Outer Space

Outer space is the emptiness that exists beyond and between celestial bodies such as stars and planets, including Earth. Though outer space is the closest thing in existence to a perfect vacuum, it is not entirely empty, containing a few hydrogen atoms per cubic meter. Space is also full of radiation, magnetic fields, and—theoretically—dark matter. It is extremely cold. Contrary to popular belief, an unprotected human would neither instantly explode nor freeze in space. What would happen? More...

Peace of Riga between Poland and Soviet Union (1921)

When Poland declared its independence in 1918 in the aftermath of WWI, its borders—like many at that time—were not formally determined. By 1920, war had broken out over conflicting expansionist attempts between Soviet Russia and Poland, which wanted its 1772 border restored. The Peace of Riga treaty split contested land between Poland and the Soviets, setting the border and effectively halting Russian expansion into Europe. Where were Poles left on the wrong side of the border sent in the 1930s? More...

John Hoyer Updike (1932)

Updike was a prolific American author whose novels and stories usually deal with the tensions and frustrations of middle-class life. Published between 1961 and 1990, his four famous "Rabbit" novels follow an ordinary American man through the latter decades of the 20th century. Updike is one of the few authors to have won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction more than once. He was also a respected literary critic who championed young authors and espoused what five rules for literary criticism? More...

Bering Sea Ice Golf Classic (2017)

This golfing challenge, played on a six-hole course with bright orange golf balls, takes place on the frozen Bering Sea off Nome, Alaska, at a time when the winds can be gale-strength. Par is 41, but winners have claimed scores as low as 23. Entry fees benefit the Lions Club. The tournament, not a wholly serious affair, coincides with the final days of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race that starts about the first of March and ends in Nome about two weeks later. More...

"Functional Cure" for HIV Reported

Last week, US doctors reported the first case of an infant being cured of HIV, and now French researchers have announced that a "functional cure" may be in reach for some adult patients as well. The key, they believe, is early intervention. They have been following the cases of 14 HIV patients who began treatment within 10 weeks of infection, took antiretroviral drugs for an average of three years, and then discontinued treatment. While they still have HIV cells in their systems, their infections have thus far remained controlled, some for as long as 10 years, without further treatment. More...
