Alamo Day (2017)

In 1836, a garrison of Texans took a stand against the Mexican Army at a Franciscan mission in San Antonio, named after the grove of cottonwood trees (alamo in Spanish) that surrounded it. Led by William Barret Travis, the band of volunteers was beseiged for 13 days by Mexican soldiers. Travis refused to surrender, and the Alamo was overrun on the morning of March 6. Cancer Claims Life of Venezuelan Leader Hugo Chávez

After a two-year battle with an undisclosed type of cancer, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has died. A charismatic populist, Chávez ascended to the presidency in 1999, seven years after a failed coup attempt landed the former army colonel in jail. His policies gained him widespread popularity among the country's poor, and he was reelected to his third term in October 2012.
