US Supreme Court Rules in Miranda v. Arizona (1966)

Miranda v. Arizona was a landmark US Supreme Court decision that led to the institution of the Miranda warning, a set of rights that police officers must read to arrestees. The festivities held here in his honor begin on the evening of June 12 with an impressive display of marchas, walking groups of singers and musicians, who parade along the Avenida da Liberdade. The celebration continues the next day with more processions and traditional folk dancing. Another custom of the day is for a young man to present the girl he hopes to marry with a pot of basil concealing a verse or love letter. More...

Tobacco On Track to Kill One Billion in 21st Century

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco will kill nearly six million people this year, including 600,000 non-smokers. If current trends continue, tobacco could be killing eight million a year by 2030 and could ultimately be responsible for one billion deaths in the 21st century. The WHO has therefore been pushing for more countries to sign its F ramework Convention on Tobacco Control, a treaty that obliges signatories to implement measures aimed at cutting smoking rates, protecting people from secondhand smoke, and curbing tobacco advertising and promotion.
