Heshen

Heshen was an 18th-century Manchu official who has come to symbolize the corruption of China's Qing dynasty. A favorite of the emperor, he rose from bodyguard to grand councilor and minister of the imperial household in just two years, at which point he took to extorting and embezzling on a grand scale. Sony Introduces the Walkman (1979)

Sony's first truly portable cassette player, the Walkman, was originally developed for a company chairman who wanted to be able to listen to music on long plane rides. In the early 1700s, he became embroiled in a controversy with Isaac Newton over what issue? More...

Snacking To Blame for Widening Waistlines

More frequent eating, not larger portions, may be to blame for the current obesity epidemic in the US. Researchers say that the average American consumed nearly one-third more calories each day in the mid-2000s than in the 1970s, and the factor that contributed most to that increase was the rise in the number of snacks and meals people consume. Over the past three decades, the average person went from eating 3.8 snacks and meals a day to 4.9, a 29 percent increase. Though portion size also increased by about 12 percent, the average number of calories per gram of food actually declined slightly. More...
