The Gang of Four was an alliance of four Chinese political officials who rose to prominence during the Cultural Revolution but were later imprisoned for implementing the harsh policies of Mao Zedong, fomenting widespread civil unrest, and attempting to seize power. Discovery of Dwarf Planet Eris Is Announced (2005)

Though Eris was first photographed in 2003, scientists working at the Palomar Observatory did not realize that they had captured pictures of a previously unknown planet until re-analyzing the images in 2005. That year, news of the newly discovered planet was announced. Slightly larger than Pluto, the icy dwarf planet has its own moon, Dysnomia, and is one of the most distant objects in the solar system. Ghanafest (2017)

Ghanafest is a one-day, annual event held on the last Saturday of July and sponsored by the Ghana Club of Chicago and other associations representing Ghanians in the Chicago area. The festival celebrates the history and culture of the west African nation and recognizes the bond of unity between Ghana and the United States. The festival includes a Ghanian Durbar, or gathering of the royal court. Entertainers from Ghana perform in a variety of musical styles, and marketplace vendors offer wares ranging from textiles, fine art, and jewelry to foods, including fried fish, Jollof-rice, and okro-soup. ALS Patients Improve with Experimental Treatment

Preliminary results of a stem cell trial suggest that it holds promise for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to a progressive loss of the ability to move one's muscles and to eventual death. Though a final report will not be prepared until the end of the year, researchers are already seeing individual improvements in patients who received transplants of stem cells harvested from their own bone marrow. They are hopeful that the treatment will provide doctors with a way to stabilize, and possibly even cure, the disease. More...
