British Troops Are Deployed in Northern Ireland (1969)

In August 1969, tensions between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland came to a head in the predominantly-Catholic Bogside neighborhood of Londonderry. In 1820, he discovered that electric current passing through a wire can deflect a nearby compass needle, a phenomenon that inspired the development of electromagnetic theory. Fields Medal Goes to Woman for First Time

Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani has become the first female recipient of the prestigious Fields Medal, regarded as the Nobel Prize of math. The prize was established in 1936 and is awarded every four years to between two and four researchers no older than 40. The age cutoff is meant to ensure that recipients are not yet at the end of their careers, because one purpose of the award is to encourage further achievements in the field.
