Tyrian Purple

Tyrian purple is a purple-red natural dye that was highly prized in the ancient world because it did not fade from weathering and sunlight but instead became brighter and more intense. Excreted by the hypobranchial gland of certain mollusks of the genus Murex, Tyrian purple was expensive and a status symbol tightly controlled by sumptuary laws. In Byzantium, it was restricted to coloring silks for imperial use. How is the dye substance used by the sea snails that secrete it? More...

Chemical Element Meitnerium Is Synthesized (1982)

In 1982, a German research team led by Peter Armbruster and Gottfried Münzenberg at the Institute for Heavy Ion Research created a new element. While bombarding bismuth-209 atoms with iron-58 ions, they detected a single atom of what is now called meitnerium. Its atomic number is 109. The artificially-produced, radioactive element is named for Lise Meitner, the Austrian-Swedish physicist and mathematician who helped discover nuclear fission. When was the name "meitnerium" officially adopted? More...

Radha Ashtami (2017)

This Hindu holiday celebrates the birth of Radha, who was the mistress of the god Krishna during the period of his life when he lived among the cowherds of Vrindavana. Although she was the wife of another gopa (cowherd), she was the best-loved of Krishna's consorts and his constant companion. Some Hindus believe that Radha is a symbol of the human soul drawn to the ineffable god Krishna. Images of Radha are bathed on this day and then dressed and ornamented before being offered food and worship. Hindus bathe in the early morning and fast all day to show their devotion to Radha. Astronomers Discover Diamond Planet

The largest diamond ever found on Earth, the 3,106 carat Cullinan diamond, is merely a speck compared to the newly discovered planet astronomers believe is largely made of diamond. Lying 4,000 light years away, the planet is about 34,175 miles (55,000 kilometers) in diameter and denser than any other yet known, leading experts to conclude that it consists largely of carbon in crystalline form. It may have once been a massive star, but it is believed to have been stripped of its outer layers by the pulsar star it orbits. More...
