The Belle Époque

French for "beautiful era," the belle époque was a period of relative political stability and artistic and cultural refinement between the late 19th century and the start of WWI, especially in France. The era was viewed as a golden age among European powers, a period characterized by new technologies and luxuries, including changes in transportation, fashion, and the arts. Thomas Edison Patents Kinetoscope in the US (1897)

Developed by Edison's assistant, W.K.L. Dickson, the kinetoscope was a precursor to the modern motion-picture projector. It works through a phenomenon known as "persistence of vision," in which a sequence of images creates the illusion of motion. Initially, Edison hoped to synchronize the images with sound, but he was unable to achieve this. The kinetoscope was designed to be viewed by one person at a time. He fancied himself a gladiator, frequently killing exotic animals. His mistress and advisors had him strangled. He considered himself the reincarnation of what mythical hero? More...

Religious services are varied to accommodate the Yoruba Orisha, Hindu, Muslim, Baptist, and other faiths represented in the citizenry. Later in the day, awards are presented at the National Awards Ceremony to those who have notably served their country. More...

Kids' Brown Bag Lunches Reach Unsafe Temperatures

Tests of more than 700 lunches packed by parents for children in full-time daycare centers found that more than 90 percent of the perishable items included in these lunches were kept at unsafe temperatures. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, perishable foods kept between 40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (4 and 60 degrees Celsius) for more than two hours are not safe for consumption. Of the lunches tested, 45 percent contained at least one ice pack but 39 percent had none, and even with multiple ice packs, the majority of food items were found to be at temperatures that were simply too warm.
