Ugarit

Ugarit was an ancient capital city on the Mediterranean coast of what is now Syria that thrived as a trade center between 1450 and 1200 BCE. Philologists knew of it from Egyptian and Hittite sources, but its location was a mystery until the accidental discovery of an ancient tomb in 1928. Among the libraries of tablets that were subsequently excavated were ones describing the basis for the cult of Baal in the previously unknown language of Ugaritic and a letter by the last king describing what? "Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick" (1901)

While speaking at the 1901 Minnesota State Fair, US Vice President Theodore Roosevelt used the proverb, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Four days later, President McKinley was shot, and, after McKinley died on the 14th, Roosevelt became president. The statement he made in Minnesota became forever associated with his foreign policy of backing up negotiations with implicit military might, and political cartoons often portrayed him toting the proverbial stick. What is the rest of the saying? More...

Frederick Soddy (1877)

Working with Ernest Rutherford, Soddy developed a theory of the disintegration of radioactive elements. In 1912, the British chemist was among the first to conclude that elements might exist in chemically indistinguishable forms—now known as isotopes—of different atomic weights. In his 1920 book Science and Life, he described the use of isotopes in determining geologic age. He later applied his scientific background to economic theories. What H.G. Wells novel was inspired by his work? More...

Fetus Fossil Suggests Sea Reptiles Had Live Young

For hundreds of years, paleontologists have pondered how plesiosaurs, giant marine reptiles that lived at the same time as dinosaurs, reproduced. Now, they may have their answer. The recent examination of a 78-million-year-old fossil uncovered in 1987 indicates that plesiosaurs gave birth to live young. The abdominal cavity of the adult Polycotylus latippinus fossil was found to contain small, soft, immature bones, suggesting that the creature they belonged to was only two-thirds of the way through its development. It also appears that, unlike other viviparous ancient marine reptiles, the plesiosaur gave birth to only one large baby rather than a number of smaller ones. More...
