Although histopathologic and immunohistochemical analyses of the central nervous system indicated a diagnosis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), molecular typing showed some features different from those of BSE in cattle (B. Recently, however, to avoid the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease) and viruses from animal sources such as avian influenza, a growing number of consumers prefer products made from non-animal sources. Researchers have found that prions are responsible for similar diseases in several species: for example, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in people; bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease, in cows; and chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer and elk. |
